He describes himself as “a typical island boy” but it only takes a quick glance at his images to imagine that the word typical could hardly do justice to this young man. Hailing from Hilo on the Big Island, Kula Pedro’s interests in photography align closely with his close connection to his home.
Despite the obvious emphasis that he has placed on making images, Pedro states that “I have never really taken advantage of all there is to capture on this rock.” Given that he will be the youngest member of the Exposure: Hawai’i team (at 24), he looks to have plenty of time in front of him. His motivation stems in part from his interest in creating new perspectives for people to view through his art, a theme which is evident in his series entitled “Moku O Keawe Ku’u Home” as it focuses on various aspects of the Hawaiian landscape in connection with Hawaiian culture.

Pedro writes that he wants to become a stronger photographer and that sounds most excellent – can’t wait to share his company and perspective as he works towards this goal during Exposure: Hawai’i!
